It is the first coronavirus vaccine to be approved, though a chinese vaccine has been cleared for 'limited use' much earlier, to be administered only on soldiers of the people's liberation army.


Russia names its 1st covid-19 vaccine 'sputnik V' after space race triumph.


REFERENCE-

In a nod to last century's cold war space race they named the vaccine sputnik V after the world's first satellite, called sputnik, launched by the Soviet Union on oct.4 ,1957.


The name signifies the country's success in being the first to have a vaccine approved.

WHY INDIA NEEDS TO BE CAUTIOUS-


India is one of the 20 countries tha has expressed interest to be part of sputnik V's phase- 3 clinical trials. In addition,the Russian direct investment fund has stated that it is planning to start mass production in other countries, including india,in partnership with local sovereign wealth funds.

HOW COVID VACCINE WILL BE DISTRIBUTED IN INDIA??


An expert committee headed by NITI Aayoga member VK paul will meet to consider the logistics and ethical aspects of procuring and administering the covid-19 vaccine.








PROSPECT-

The serum institute of india has been permitted for conducting phase-2 and 3 human trails of the third vaccine candidate developed by the Oxford University. The pune-based institute has partnered with AstraZeneca for manufacturing it.


The Oxford vaccine is also undergoing final phase 3 trail in Brazil.
